The list currently includes: Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santhali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

Historical Evolution

Originally contained only 14 languages. Sindhi was added in 1967. Konkani, Manipuri, and Nepali in 1992. Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, and Santhali in 2003.

Being in this list means the government must promote the language. Students can take competitive exams (like UPSC) in any of these languages.
